What is Lamas

LAMAS was founded in 1855 for the purpose of investigating the antiquities and early history of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Metropolitan County of Middlesex, and is a charity.

LAMAS does this by promoting research into London’s archaeology, local history and historic buildings, and by supporting the publication of the results that come from such research. The Society makes this information available on this website, and in printed publications, in lectures and in conferences.

Publications

The Society devotes by far the largest part of its income to publishing. Keeping members in touch with recent research and making major contributions to London scholarship.

The Archaeology Committee meets on average four times during the year, in January, April, July and October, and receives regular reports from organisations active in London archaeology.

The Local History Committee is a sub-committee of the governing LAMAS Council and is responsible for presenting concerns specific to Local History to the Council.

The LAMAS Historic Buildings and Conservation Committee (HBCC) reviews listed building consent and other planning applications that have an impact upon heritage assets.
