Aims and history

LAMAS was founded in 1855 for the purpose of investigating the antiquities and early history of the Cities of London and Westminster and the Metropolitan County of Middlesex.

Today LAMAS does this by promoting the study of London’s archaeology, local history and historic buildings, via lectures, conferences, visits and the publication of the results of related research.

The Society also plays an important role in monitoring the conservation and development of London’s built heritage, advising on hundreds of planning proposals every year.

LAMAS is also keen to stimulate the interest of young people in London’s archaeology, local history and historic buildings and supports the work of the Central London Young Archaeologists’ Club.
