Two documents to dip into

Two publications promoting procedures for the conduct of archaeological work in Greater London have recently appeared, and LAMAS welcomes both. One is by Historic England, the other by the Corporation of London. You should dip into these two sets of guidelines, as they will affect archaeological work.

In February 2026 Historic England produced a two-part guide called Managing Archaeology in London: announced as ‘guidance for developers, archaeologists and planners to promote the understanding and enjoyment of our historic environment’. Part 1 deals with policy and processes, part 2 with practical considerations (mostly instructions for archaeologists). Download it from here: https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/publications/managing-archaeology-london/.

Second, the City of London Corporation officially adopted the Celebrating Heritage Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on 22 June 2026, to guide new developments in using the historical character of the Square Mile. This explores the City’s distinct identity through three lenses: spirit (traditions and activity), street (streetscapes and buildings), and strata (hidden archaeology beneath the ground). It attempts to show developers how to respect existing context, like listed buildings or street patterns, while improving public access and users’ experience of the City’s history. It will be fully implemented in decision-making alongside the formal adoption of the City Plan in late 2026.

LAMAS made suggestions about the text in draft during April 2026: see https://www.lamas.org.uk/lamas-responds-to-citys-planning-guidance-for-heritage-assets/. Download the SPD text from https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/assets/Services-Environment/Heritage-SPD-2026.pdf.
