A Roman intaglio from London
Martin Henig and Christine Jones
A red jasper intaglio was found in spoil derived from the Billingsgate Lorry Park site. The device is Mercury, an appropriate subject for a London gem, since he was pre-eminently a god of trade and commerce; however, this is the first to be found in the city. It may be dated on stylistic grounds to the mid 2nd century AD.
