A mace for Mincing Lane Precinct

A recent loan to the Museum of London is a fruitwood staff bearing an inscription which records that it belonged to one James Burkin (1622-1677) and was given in his memory to become the mace – or wand of office – of Mincing Lane Precinct in the City of London. This paper reconstructs Burkin’s biography: of Protestant refugee descent from Brabant, he was a resident of Mincing Lane, held office in the Clothworkers’ Company, and was a Common Councillor and Alderman of London.
