The aim of the project was to seek evidence of the Roman cemetery known to have existed on the east side of the City. It became clear, however, that the site had been almost entirely quarried for gravel in the medieval period, and that only residual evidence - in the form of Roman pottery and fragments of human bone - survived. A series of gravel pits, and several barrel- or wattle-lined soakaways/cesspits are described, together with the pottery, animal bones and small finds from them. Of particular note is a group of leather shoes from an early or mid 15th-century ditch.
